Hollie & Lewis – A Spring Wedding at Friern Manor

There are weddings where you show up as the photographer and leave feeling like a guest. Hollie and Lewis’s day at Friern Manor was one of those. By mid-morning people were calling me Tel rather than “the photographer” – which is always a sign that something is working. The warmth in that group was genuine and immediate, and it set the tone for everything that followed.

April at Friern Manor suited them well. The gardens were coming into their own – that particular spring fullness where everything is fresh without being overstated – and the weather held, which meant we could use the outdoor spaces properly rather than working around them.

Friern Manor is five minutes from home for me. I know the venue in every season, at every point of the day, in every light condition. On a wedding like this one – relaxed, fluid, a couple with real personality – that familiarity meant I could focus entirely on the people rather than the logistics.

The Day

Hollie and Lewis are the kind of couple who don’t need managing. They have enough ease between them that it extends outward – to the bridal party, to the guests, eventually to the photographer. The day moved with that quality throughout. No friction, no anxiety, just a group of people who were genuinely glad to be there and showed it without being prompted.

The ceremony was personal and unhurried. The kind where you can hear people breathing. Then it opened up into the reception and the gardens, and the afternoon did what April afternoons at Friern Manor do when the weather cooperates – it looked exactly right.

The Portraits

With the gardens available and the light behaving, we had room to move through different parts of the grounds rather than staying in one corner of them. Hollie and Lewis were naturals once they forgot about the camera – which didn’t take long. The images that came from those moments, when they were just talking to each other and the rest of the day was happening around them, are the ones that hold up best.

“Tel was great from the moment we found his page on Google. He is local to Essex so has great knowledge of the wedding venues in our area, which put us at ease straight away. We met him in person a couple of months prior and were very impressed with his professionalism and kindness – he had answers to all sorts of wedding-related questions, not just photography, leaning on his wealth of experience.

Tel was so patient on the day. His humour and patience made it so much easier. He was so relaxed with us and kept us smiling and laughing throughout the whirlwind of the day. We felt like he was part of the family and blended in – which meant we were lucky to gain beautiful photos in return.

The photos of us where we are in our own little world, unaware photos were being taken – we loved those natural shots. All our guests said how personable and friendly Tel was. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Thank you for being such a big part of our special day and giving us memories to treasure forever.”
