An Autumn Wedding at Blake Hall | Holly & Billy

An Autumn Wedding at Blake Hall

Holly, Billy, and a golden October day in the Essex countryside – with a certain four-legged scene-stealer who had very clear opinions about being left out of the photographs.

There are weddings where the season feels incidental – where the day could have happened in any month and the photographs would look much the same. And then there are weddings like Holly and Billy’s, where the time of year felt entirely intentional. October at Blake Hall in full colour. Warm tones everywhere you looked: in the gardens, in the décor, in the flowers, in the light. It felt less like a season providing a backdrop and more like a season being invited to the wedding.

Blake Hall sits in 60 acres of grounds near Ongar in the heart of Essex, its 17th-century barns and manicured gardens offering a setting that suits autumn better than almost any other time of year. The ancient trees, the rose garden, the wide open lawns – in October they carry a warmth and texture that’s difficult to replicate in any other season. Holly and Billy understood that instinctively. The colour palette they chose felt continuous with the landscape around them, as though the whole day had grown naturally from the same place.

A day built on good taste and genuine warmth

From the moment I arrived, this was clearly a couple who had thought carefully about every detail without letting that care become visible as effort. The florals from Events by the Emporium – complemented by beautiful additional arrangements from Billy’s mum – carried that same rich, seasonal sensibility throughout. The cake from Creative Cakes brought a handcrafted quality to the details. Every element had been chosen with intention, and together they made for a day that felt coherent and personal from start to finish.

Holly and Billy themselves were exactly the kind of couple that make this job feel genuinely rewarding. Relaxed, warm, and completely present – never performing for the camera, just getting on with enjoying their day and letting the images happen around them. That ease is rarer than you’d think, and it produces photographs that have a different quality to them. The moments aren’t manufactured. They’re real, and they read that way.

Otis

I should mention Otis.

Blake Hall is a pet-friendly venue, and Holly and Billy made full use of that. Otis arrived with strong opinions about where he should be at all times, and those opinions almost always aligned with wherever the camera was pointed. He inserted himself into portraits, wandered into ceremony moments, and generally conducted himself as though the day had been organised for his benefit.

He was, objectively, correct. Some of the most genuinely candid images of the day involved Otis doing exactly as he pleased. Dogs at weddings either cause mild chaos or produce the best photographs of the day. In this case, it was unambiguously the latter.

What Holly & Billy said

“Can’t recommend Terry enough!! We booked him after seeing our friends’ wedding photos and knew we had to book him. And we can’t be happier that we did – his communication before and on the day were amazing, his friendly calming nature helped us on the day to get some outstanding photos, made us feel at ease and sometimes we didn’t even realise he was there getting some amazing shots in the background. All guests have commented how brilliant Terry was and how great his final photos look. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!”

Blake Hall in autumn

If you’re considering Blake Hall for your wedding, October and the surrounding autumn months offer something genuinely special there. The light through the Hay Barn’s picture window in October is different to any other month – warmer, lower, more directional. The gardens shift from the formality of summer into something richer and more atmospheric. The Essex Barn, with its historic timbers and fairy-lit canopy, feels entirely at home in the shorter days.

It’s a venue I’ve been wanting to photograph for some time, and Holly and Billy’s day delivered everything I’d hoped. I’m already looking forward to returning.

If you’re getting married at Blake Hall and would like to talk through your photography, I’d love to hear from you.
